Men, Anger and Depression

So why "Men" and depression...why not just people in general? Some of that idea comes from the fact that men and women tend to experience depression differently. In fact, many of us hold a stereotype of depression in general that actually speaks to more of a female expression of depression.

That includes tearfulness, hopelessness, sadness, difficulty making decisions and functioning in general.

Male Depression, on the other hand, doesn't always show up with tearfulness and sadness. Instead, we often see anger, irritability, frustration, drinking too much, isolation/withdrawal,

reckless behavior and controlling behavior.

There are many reasons for these differences, some we know of and some we don't but overall we find that it's a combination of testosterone, brain chemistry, your background and environment, all of which can add up to a condition which interferes in your life including your relationships, your relationships at work as well as losing interest in hobbies and other experiences which gave you a sense of meaning in life.

Unfortunately, many men who suffer from depression are undiagnosed and are simply considered jerks or a pain in the rear. Now think about this for a second, if your anger is coming from depression but you don't realize that, and you start hearing people referring to you as a pain and a jerk, what do you think that does to your depression? And so you end up in a increasing spiral of misery.

The good news is that depression, for many men, is highly treatable sometimes with counseling and sometimes with counseling and an appropriate medication...there are many options available and so it maybe reassuring that all you have to do is reach out for help.

Of course, much easier said than done, right? But by making that one phone call, you're already on the road to leading a happier, more fulfilling life!

If your depression is so bad that you feel like harming yourself or others, then we advise that you dial 911 immediately or go to your nearest ER.
